Trenton Water Works (TWW) is improving its water-distribution system by installing water-main flushing assemblies in targeted areas.

TWW is installing 170 flushing assemblies in areas of its 683-mile distribution system, the first of which being installed in Hamilton Township this month.

Trenton, Ewing Township, Lawrence Township, and Hopewell Township will follow.

“The flushing devices will enable the water utility to flush water mains of aged water and sediment, improving overall water quality,” said Sean Semple, Director of Trenton’s Department of Water and Sewer, which operates Trenton Water Works.

“This $1.7-million capital project is part of TWW’s Legionella mitigation.”

TWW supplies approximately 29 million gallons of drinking water daily to more than 200,000 people, including residents of Trenton and four neighboring municipalities – Ewing, Hamilton, Hopewell, and Lawrence townships.

Once all flushing assemblies are in place, TWW water-distribution-system personnel will operate the flushers and open fire hydrants as needed as part of the water utility’s low, conventional, and high-velocity water-main flushing schedules, according to the water utility.

In early April, TWW performed a months-long low-velocity flushing program throughout its service area.

The flushing program increases the water circulation throughout the distribution system and increases and optimizes chlorine levels.
