The Nassau Street mid-block crosswalk between Vandeventer Avenue and Moore Street is in line for pedestrian safety improvements proposed by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT).

The Princeton Council adopted a resolution in support of the proposed improvements at its June 12 meeting. Nassau Street, also known as Route 27, is under NJDOT’s jurisdiction.

The proposed improvements include creating a raised crosswalk and installing curb extensions into Nassau Street. The curb extensions would decrease the pedestrian crossing distance from one side of Nassau Street to the other side.

“The Mayor and Council support the general design concepts presented in the plan and support NJDOT’s efforts to make pedestrian safety improvements in this highly pedestrianized area of Princeton’s historic main street,” the resolution stated.

The resolution also asks the NJDOT and its consultant to continue to refine the design in consultation with community stakeholders, such as the Municipality of Princeton, Experience Princeton, Princeton University and the State Historic Preservation Office.

Princeton Councilman David Coen said he wholeheartedly supports the concept.

“We know this is a highly used crosswalk. The NJDOT approached us (to make improvements). I think it’s fantastic that the state was being proactive (about making improvements),” Cohen said.

Princeton Councilwoman Eve Niedergang also praised the NJDOT for the plan, which also includes enhanced lighting at the mid-block crosswalk.

“It is a dangerous intersection to cross at night,” she said.
