Boyfriend charged in killing of girlfriend’s daughter in 2019 after recent welfare check

PERTH AMBOY – A Perth Amboy man has been charged with killing one of his girlfriend’s twin daughters in 2019, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone, Edison Police Chief Thomas Bryan and Perth Amboy Police Chief Lawrence Cattano.

On July 26, the Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCP&P) contacted the Edison Police Department to conduct a welfare check of Monique Durham’s twin 5-year-old daughters, according to a press release through the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office on Aug. 2.

As a result of communicating with Durham, 27, who is from Edison, local law enforcement referred the matter to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and a joint investigation was commenced.

As a result of the joint investigation, it was determined that one of the 5-year-old girls was
missing. It was further determined that no family or friends had seen the child since 2019, according to the press release.

As the investigation continued, it was determined that Durham’s boyfriend, Matthew Chiles, 29, allegedly engaged in conduct resulting in the missing child’s death in 2019, and illegally disposed of the child’s remains, which occurred in Perth Amboy, according to the press release.

Chiles has been charged with two counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, one count of second-degree desecration of human remains and one count of first-degree murder, according to the press release.

Durham has been charged with two counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, and one count of third-degree theft, according to the press release.

Durham and Chiles are currently being housed at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center in North Brunswick pending a detention hearing.
