Bordentown Walking Tours and the Downtown Bordentown Association have partnered to conduct the annual Haunted History Ghost Walks in downtown Bordentown City this year throughout the month of October.
Hoping to increase attendance and proceeds over previous years by expanding the number of tours, the company is working alongside the Downtown Bordentown Association to raise funds for the local business group by hosting tours every week this month.
Bordentown Walking Tours, which began operating historical walking tours in the city this spring, will lead the Haunted History Ghost Walks five days per week until Halloween. On the ghost walks, professional guides will reveal haunting stories about the town’s history.
Though the tours advertise, “true tales of the macabre, horrific, and terrifying hidden history of Bordentown,” their owner, Mark Neurohr-Pierpaoli says they are actually family-friendly. Tickets for children under ten who can walk are half price, while children in strollers do not require a ticket.
“There’s nothing rated R about the tour,” says Bordentown Walking Tours owner Mark Neurohr-Pierpaoli. “You can tell a great, scary story while still keeping it PG-13. And the fact is, the truth is stranger than fiction. You can’t make this stuff up.”
The Haunted History tours highlight the city’s rich past, which predate the Revolutionary War. A number of historical figures, including Thomas Paine, pamphleteer during the American Revolution; Francis Hopkinson, signer of the Declaration of Independence; and Joseph Bonaparte, the exiled king of Spain, all made their homes in the city during the last 300 years. Each of them also makes their way onto the ghost tour.
A number of haunted houses are also highlighted, as residents have shared their personal stories of ghostly encounters throughout the years with the Downtown Bordentown Association.
“Everyone likes a good scare, and this town is full of ghosts,” says Neurohr-Pierpaoli. “Bordentown has so much history. The claims are all supported by the facts of what’s happened here in the past. People have to travel to Bordentown to see what we’ve got going on for the month leading up to Halloween.”
