Health fair provides medical exams to dozens

SOUTH BRUNSWICK – More than 100 people attended a free health screening and disease awareness and prevention fair geared toward people of South Asian descent.

The Indian Health Camp of New Jersey (IHCNJ) organized the fifth consecutive fair at Durga Mandir in South Brunswick on Aug. 13, and the 19th event overall, for anyone over age 40 who does not have medical insurance.

The health screenings included blood test, EKG, vision screening for glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, physical examination, cardiology and physical therapy counseling, various types of cancer screening and prevention education, chronic disease self-management, diabetes and stroke education, HIV testing and education, dietary counseling, pharmacy counseling, mental health screening and other ancillary services, according to information provided by Dr. Tushar Patel, president of IHCNJ.

Blood test reports were reviewed by physicians and mailed to all participants with a counseling note for any abnormal tests. The blood test services were provided by Rupen Patel of Accurate Diagnostic Labs.

The next health fair will be held on Nov. 12 at Shree Swaminarayan Temple, 201 Penhorn Ave., Secaucus. The completed registration form can be mailed to IHCNJ, P.O. Box 5686, Hillsborough 08844 by Oct 30.

IHCNJ will then plan celebrations for its 20th anniversary next year.
