HILLSBOROUGH: We must all contribute to finding a cure to cancer

To the editor:
In his final State of the Union address on Tuesday night, President Barack Obama announced a "new national effort" to find a cure for cancer. He urged all Americans— each and every one of us— to help with the fight against cancer.
We each must do our part. This year alone, nearly 600,000 Americans will die from cancer. That’s a lot of people! That’s too many people! That’s twice the population of our county! But we can all do something to help.
When someone we love is diagnosed with cancer, we immediately assume the worst. Before doctors determine its stage, its origin and whether it’s malignant or benign, we begin to worry. We shouldn’t have to worry anymore; we shouldn’t let cancer win; we shouldn’t allow cancer to kill so many people.
Curing cancer is our next moonshot; it can and will be done. And we should do all that we can to help.
There are 40,000 people living in our town. If all of us donated just one dollar to cancer research, we could help make a difference. Think about the impact $40,000 could make! We could even inspire other towns in our county and state to help fund the fight against cancer.
I urge everyone to donate just one dollar to the American Cancer Society to help fund the fight against cancer. Together, we can make a difference.
